    Abstract:
Translation has been used to teach and learn foreign languages for many centuries. However, some researchers and educators have objections to the use of translation to learn a foreign language, while others find advantages in using translation in foreign-language classrooms. This could lead to confusion on whether translation is effective or not in foreign-language classrooms. This dissertation looks into the confusion and aims to find out which translation activities are the most widely used and most effective in foreign-language classrooms. Questionnaires were carried out with 28 teachers and 41students of English in Spain. The questionnaires aim to collect their opinions on the use and effectiveness of translation in foreign-language classrooms according to the participants’ experience. It is found that translation activities are still used, mostly by students and that most teachers believe translation activities are effective but more commonly used by them in lower levels.
