Abstract:
Behavior in front of the recent interest in the skin-to-skin method and the absence of information regarding this method in Catalonia, it was raised to analyze the use of this technique and the existence of protocols established by Catalan hospitals. We decided to use an observational, descriptive and analytical study during six month, from September to March. Data were been collected by telephone interview with a questionnaire of 22 questions to all Catalan hospitals. This questionnaire collected data of hospitals characteristics like the realization of the kangaroo, the use of protocols or the introduction of breastfeeding. The 100% of hospitals performed kangaroo. In case of caesarean section, in 28.6% of cases it will be the mother who is allowed to make the first skin contact with her newborn, and the remaining 57.1% of cases is the father who make it with the baby until the mother is able to do. Only a 2.4% of cases is not performed due to lack of space the surgical area. The registration of this practice is conducted in a 57.1% of cases and 23.8% of them do it in the child’s medical history, compared with 33.3% recorded in that specific care sheet postpartum. However, in 42.9% of cases it is not carried out the registration, despite being considered a nursing care. In 50% of cases this practice has a protocol, a 7.1% implementation of a protocol is planned to do it, and finally a 42.9% do not have an established protocol. It is emphasized that this method is applied in all Catalan hospitals. It demonstrated that consider this method as an essential part of the care of newborn focused on their development, yet not apply it in a way protocol as a whole, but a high percentage of hospitals is carried out with due regard to a number of criteria and circumstances given during labor.
