Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Official, national and international organizations recommend breastfeeding (BF) for at least 6 months. In this review, the main causes and consequences of early cessation of BF in Spain are investigated due to the low rates of BF that have existed for decades. These include decreased milk, type of delivery, pain during BF, incorporation of women to work, previous expectations for nursing and social and family environment. The consequences of this cessation are: increased risk of gastrointestinal infections and hospitalization as a result of infections during the first year of life, atopic dermatitis and sudden infant death syndrome, childhood lymphatic cancer, type 1 diabetes, asthma, necrotizing enterocolitis in infants premature, obesity in adolescence and adulthood and hypertension and type 2 diabetes in adults. The support, promotion and protection of breastfeeding in all levels of care are essential to help parents to continue and fulfill their goals of BF. The methodology used in this study was a systematic search in the following databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, Dialnet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Cuiden and FECYT. They have been selected science articles and items dating from April 1996 until September 2014.
