Siderophores, iron chelating agents for sustainable agriculture

    Abstract:
There is currently a great demand for food and in order to meet it, some problems existing in the crops must be solved, as is the case of iron chlorosis. This iron deficiency occurs mainly in alkaline soils because iron becomes insoluble in basic pH. Inorganic and synthetic fertilizers remedy this nutritional deficiency, but these agrochemicals represent an environmental problem. For this reason, siderophores are an emerging area of research in agriculture. These molecules secreted by microorganisms have the ability to chelate iron and make it bioavailable, which allows the plant to supply this nutrient and allow its growth.
