Abstract:
-Objective: The analysis of the dynamics and particularities regarding breastfeeding in our society and the reasons and circumstances of birth. The development of a particular breastfeeding support group to investigate how it has been established by mutual assistance, reciprocity and self-care processes. -Method: Through qualitative methodology and document analysis, we have conducted interviews to investigate the activities carried out within the Mametes breastfeeding support group. We take a narrative approach to the reality of women in this group, as well as the midwife who liaised with the women who breastfed and came to the local health Centre. -Results: In 2006, a group of mothers all found themselves at a similar moment of their lives. They became interested in the difficulties that the mothers were facing in trying to breastfeed successfully, and so the Mametes group was born. They ascertained that breastfeeding appeared to be less common, it lacked support from health professionals and even devalued women who were unable to do it well. The Mametes group has dedicated itself to supporting mothers in their homes who are faced with insecurities that can come about when trying to breastfeed, such as common doubts about giving enough milk, correct position, cases of lack of support, ignorance and misconceptions, along with prejudices of mothers, grandmothers and neighbors who have had to change Conclusions: Mametes has contributed to this research into the practice of breastfeeding, which many people in society still disapprove of in public. The group has created a network that has given rise to a new model of care, enabling a space for fears and insecurities to be expressed. This has made it known that women who breastfeed are not alone and where breastfeeding is encouraged as a natural practice, a symbiosis between instinct and culture. Keywords: Support,
