Abstract:
Abstract The Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP), which works under the philosophy of the Family Centered Developmental Care (FCDC), it evaluates and interprets body language of premature infants in order to prepare an individualized care plan according to their state of neurodevelopment, which improves its development in the short, medium and long term. This method has been evaluated by a large number of quantitative and qualitative studies, in which the studied sample, were the same premature patients and / or staff of the units where it was performed. This study aims to give a voice to parents whose infants have been taken care of according to this model of care and know about their experience and perception. To achieve this, a qualitative study has been performed using semi-structured interviews to parents of preterm infants less than 32 gestational weeks who were hospitalized in the neonatal unit of Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona in a three year interval, from 2013 to 2015. The results show that prematurity implies a psychological, labor and economic impact for the parents, who assess positively, the caring received in the neonatal unit and they also verbalized that the professional and emotional support received has helped them to establish a satisfactory bond to their baby, it has also provided a normal family development and they say that these care models should be extended to the neonatal units of other hospitals.
