    Abstract:
This dissertation aims to provide a thorough and complete description of the phenomenon of loanword in today’s Spanish and, specifically, the lexical loanword. This characterization includes all facets of the loanwoard: origin, part of speech, subject, year, etc. For this purpose, it is followed a methodology that combines two main linguistic approaches: Sociolinguistics and Corpus linguistics. Thus, quantitative and qualitative analysis are brought together and, at the same time, the phenomenon of the loanword is broached according to its own nature, that is, from a viewpoint that takes into account the key role that extralinguistic factors play in linguistic issues. Moreover, this dissertation examines the lexical variation caused by the incorporation of some loanwords, the factors that lead to the selection of one or another variant, and the categories you can classify both loanwords and their equivalents. In the same way, an overview of the major contributions to the concept of loanword that different authors have made throughout history is presented. To sum up, it is offered a broad explanation of the phenomenon of loanword in contemporary Spanish; an explanation that focuses on what the loanword is, how and why it arises and what are the aspects that can determine its fate.
