Abstract:
INTRODUCCTION: The diabetic foot is one of the biggest complications that patients diagnosed presents with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. Therefore, it is necessary a good health education and knowledge of self care that these patients have. OBJECTIVE: To know the risk factors that cause diabetic foot and identify the level of selfcare of diabetic patients treated in primary care. METHODS: Descriptive pilot study on three populations (Potríes, Bellreguard and Villanueva de Castellón) during the days 25th, 26th and 28th of January 2016. Data were collected through a questionnaire complimented by patients. The variables included were: sociodemographic, pathological history, medications used to control Diabetes Mellitus, smoking, socioeconomic status, care of the patient towards his lower limbs, etc. A lower limb of the same physical examination, as well as the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test was also performed. RESULTS: 36 questionnaires and satisfactory scans were obtained. 39% of the patients have had diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus for more than five years. 42% of the patients are 3 overweight, and less than half, 47% make daily physical activity. 72% of the patients have good foot hygiene, but 59% has any malformation or callus feet. 39% of the patients did not exceed the test with monofilament. Only 36% of the patients regularly attends the Podiatrist, which coincide with the 31% who go to the doctor at least once a year. CONCLUSSIONS: It’s necessary to do a good health education to patients with Diabetes Mellitus to prevent bad lifestyle habits that trigger in a diabetic foot and its possible consequences.
