Resumen: Verb complementation is a broad topic of grammar since verbs are followed by different elements depending on their semantic and syntactic features (Swan, 2005). This paper deals with a specific type of construction: ergative constructions. The aim of the present study is to define and to analyze ergative constructions in English. Additionally, English ergative constructions are compared in general terms to the Spanish version of this type of constructions. Ergative constructions are similar in both languages as English and Spanish are nominative-accusative languages. Furthermore, 28 Spanish students of English were asked to answer different questions concerning transitivity, intransitivity and ergativity. La complementació verbal és un tema ampli pel què fa a la gramàtica, ja que els verbs van seguits per diferents elements segons les seves característiques semàntiques i sintàctiques (Swan, 2005). Aquest treball tracta d'un tipus concret de construcció: les construccions ergatives. L'objectiu del present estudi és definir i analitzar construccions ergatives en anglès. A més, les construccions ergatives angleses es comparen en termes generals amb la versió espanyola d'aquest tipus de construccions. Les construccions ergatives són similars en ambdues llengües, ja que l'anglès i l'espanyol són llengües nominatiu-acusatives. A més, es va demanar a 28 estudiants espanyols d'anglès que responguessin diferents preguntes sobre transitivitat, intransitivitat i ergativitat.
