Title in different languages: Incidental Vocabulary Learning by EFL Students: The Effect of Marginal Glosses in Online L2 Reading
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of L2 marginal glossing in online L2 reading on the incidental vocabulary learning of EFL learners. Secondary school students in Spain read an article containing 10 unknown vocabulary words and completed a vocabulary comprehension pre-test. Three weeks later, they read the same article glossed differently (textual, pictorial, textual-pictorial, or no glossing) and completed a vocabulary post-test. Results revealed there was no significant difference in test scores between experimental groups, readers indicated greater preference for textual-pictorial glosses, and readers, on average, prefer glossing over no glossing in L2 reading.
