English-speaking cultural representation in EFL coursebooks and teachers’ practices

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFM:1719
    Authors:  Turnbull, Mia Suzanne
    Abstract:
This study examines the inclusion of cultural diversity of English-speaking countries in primary EFL classes at one school in Catalonia through the coursebook Open Up and teachers’ practices. Based on hegemony of the U.S. and the U.K., cultural diversity, and intercultural competence (IC), the study’s qualitative coursebook analysis and teacher questionnaire found that there is room for more English-speaking cultural representation and varieties to be included in classrooms and content. This study opens the door for further research into EFL coursebooks and materials, understanding how classroom practices and materials allow students’ intercultural competence to develop.
