Title in different languages: Paleochristian epigraphy of Tarraco: approximation to the formal definition of the urban officina lapidaria in Late Antiquity
Abstract: In this work, that is named Paleochistian epigraphy of Tarraco: approximation to the formal definition of the urban officina lapidaria in Late Antiquity, a review of the epigraphic corpus of early Christian inscriptions from Tarraco is performed. Based on the initial corpus of Géza Alföldy (Die Römischen Inschriften von Tarraco, 1975), which provides basic information of the inscriptions from the city and a more deeper description of these inscriptions, and supplementing it with new epigraphic contributions that have appeared in recent archaeological excavations and in the most recent publications, it has been updated this epigraphic corpus Tarraconense. At a time of changes as was the Late Antiquity, epigraphy reflects the situation that society lived, the change of mentality that came with the advent of Christianity. With the new groups that arise during this time (fossori, church ...), epigraphy put distance with the imperial tradition, but still maintaining certain aspects, such as paleography. Paleography forms one of the key aspects in the development of this work. The identification and subsequent analysis of an own officina in the city of Tarraco, the officina of double and single draw lines (extending the officina identified by Jordi Lopez and Diana Gorostidi in an article, 2008) shows the important epigraphic production of the city in those times, and especially during the IV and V centuries, those in which Tarraco enjoyed a privileged position in the empire. From epigraphy it can also demonstrate the relationship between the cities of Tarraco and Cartago, a relationship that is justified by the transfer of knowledge regarding the epigraphic production and decoration, especially, of the sarcophagi of the two cities. The incorporation of unpublished pieces recently discovered in excavations in the city of Tarragona in the epigraphic corpus of the city demonstrates the great importance of the city in this very turbulent and important episode of history. An epigraphic corpus composed of 144 pieces from both the urban core and the surrounding territories and dated between the III and VII centuries set, and so show the different pieces, the great importance of the city of Tarraco during Late Antiquity.
