Buiding up Nursing Identity: A study of Facultat de Ciències de la Salut Blanquerna's Students' discourse, in clinical environments.

    Abstract:
    The aim of this project is to study the Faculty of Health Sciences Blanquerna students’ build up of professional identity. Professional identity is individually built and it needs social endorsement. The social background influences professional identity in the places where the profession is developed. In order to know how professional identity is built up a descriptive cross sectional study using mix method, qualitative and quantitative, will be developed with freshmen and 4th year students. For the qualitative part of the study, participant observation at the clinical practice settings of the freshmen and 4th year students will be performed. Group interviews with mentor nurses at the hospitals, other professionals participating in students follow up, professors doing the follow up of the students, Nursing subjects’ professors and patients who receive students care, will also be performed. For the quantitative part, the nursing care plans designed by the students during their clinical practice will be analyzed using the Q-DIO questionnaire validated into Spanish. The quality and evolution of freshmen and 4rth year students written language will be measured with the above-mentioned questionnaire. The expectation is that the professional identity observed in the students’ behavior during their clinical practice is far from the professional identity expressed by the faculties, while the evolution to be observed in the written language between freshmen and 4th year students will show a positive evolution.
