Abstract: In this project, the hygrothermal behavior of a single-family detached house located in Lleida has been studied. The substitution of some layers of the exterior walls for an earth layer has been modelled, specifically the hollow brick partition and plaster layer. Different types of earths have been studied and the optimal has been chosen considering the reduction of energy consumption associated to heating and cooling. With the optimal type of earth, energy consumption associated to heating and cooling is reduced by 4%. Even though the energy savings do not justify rehabilitation, it could be applicable to new construction, given that comfort conditions improve when introducing the earth layer. Relative humidity is reduced inside the house and temperature changes are softened. Additionally, the environmental impact of the earth layer is significantly lower than the base case conventional materials impact.
