Nurses knowledge about pediatric patient pain

Abstract:
Pain in children is a public health problem of great importance for anyone to overlook. Although there are knowledge and ways to alleviate this pain, often the pain in children is not acknowledge, ignore or even deny. The paediatric pain has been a practically absent subject in the training program of all nursing professionals, and all the myths, misconceptions and sociocultural prejudices have not allowed to develop an appropriate treatment to minimise this pain. In recent decades this problem has become important in the field of investigation. Goal: Provide information and assess the knowledge about paediatric pain to nursing professionals at Hospital del Vendrell. Method: Experimental study, analytical and prospective using quantitative methodology. To evaluate the knowledge and the attitudes in paediatric pain we used a questionnaire before and after two sessions of training and preparing a poster with pain assessments scales, brochures and educational material. This questionnaire will be delivered to nurses who want to take part in the study. The data obtained from those questionnaires will be analysed with SPSS Statistics 22.0 software. The analysis will be divided in two parts, first a univariate analysis to describe the different variables and in second place a bivariate analysis with the aim of analysing the relationship or association between two studied variables. The qualitative variable will be compared using the Pearson’s Chi-square test and for the quantitative variable we will use “t” Student and analysis of variance (ANOVA) according to their categories. Used a degree of statistical significance p < 0,05. Hypothesis: educational measures, evaluation and treatment of paediatric pain will improve the quality of care and the level of satisfaction of professional nurses.
