Title in different languages: From rhetorical utopia to dystopian practice: the (re)construction of cities of the future in the dispute for the spatial centrality.
Abstract: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the discussions about central role of cities has been accentuated. Especially, from the loss of the city's industrial category due to phenomena of relocation of traditional industries. In this context, a new suburbanization has emerged that give results like the edge cities. Cities have developed new strategies for its aim to keep on occupying central position in the new geography. The main strategies, downtowns and technopolis, are present in this work. The first are expressions that aim to rise as global locations with a high symbolic significance. While the technopolis are ways of technological reindustrialization under the paradigm of a new information economy. Both, however, share the same objective: to attract global flows in a competitive context.
