Title in different languages: Improving selective collection of municipal waste due to two awareness campaigns: the case of Amposta
Abstract: The problem of waste, especially the difficulty to manage them properly, has driven programs and policies that attempt to compensate the negative effects caused to the environment. Their main objectives are to reduce waste generation and increase separate collection rates. In this work I use the probabilistic method known as Causal Chain Approach to measure the influence exerted by two institutional awareness campaigns. The case study is the town of Amposta (Tarragona) and the campaigns “Envàs, on vas?” and “Separar bé els residus és un joc de nens”, both performed by the Catalan Government. The methodology used allows to measure the causal relationship between the awareness campaign and the improve of separate collection. The uplift in probability to improve separate collection created by the awareness campaigns is of 27.9%. This result is based on the sum of the individual fractions of all respondents who mentioned to have improved separate collection rates of municipal waste during the last years.
