Title in different languages: Caring transnational migration of spanish nurses in France and the United Kingdom
Abstract: Abstract Since the beginning of the economic crisis in Spain, more than 6,500 professional nurses have emigrated to other countries in the EU (mainly UK, Germany, France, Finland, Italy and the Netherlands) looking for an improvement in their working conditions, as well as in their career prospects and life in general. In this sense, "going abroad" is a determining option for many professionals, not only for recent graduates but also for those who finished their studies long ago but can't find any opportunities with the current staff recruitment policies in the nursery field, both in the public and private sectors. While the ratio nurse / patient in Spain is below the European recommendations, the sector precariousness, lack of social recognition of the nurses' work and low wages are among the elements that expel nurses from Spain, “push-factor” according to the Classical Migration Theory by Portes and Borocz (1988). Among the “pull factors” -the attraction elements – we find stability, better wages and working conditions, search for new experiences, learning new professional contexts and acquisition of new life experiences. Based in this idea and taking into account my own professional career as well as the theoretical contributions of migration by Madeleine Leininger, Patricia Benner and Afaf Meleis, this project aims to analyze the experiences of migrant professionals, the push/pull factors that affect professional nurses in their determination to migrate to England and France (the two main hubs for Spanish nurses) and the reasons why many European companies decide to recruit professionals trained in Spain. Methodologically, this is a qualitative research project with three different levels of analysis: Spanish professional migrants, health professionals in the context of migration, and recruitment managers of European companies. The semi-structured interviews and focus group are the techniques of choice. Inregard to the reasons why European companies responsible for recruiting nurses focus on Spain, we want to highlight the professionalism of caring and the humanization character of nurses, in addition to the technical studies existing in the curricula of nursing as an added value.
