Title in different languages: Reception and transcendence of Arthur Rackham's fantastic imagery in Catalonia (1905-1945)
Abstract: Arthur Rackham (London, 1867 - Limpsfield, 1939) was an illustrator who lived and worked during the Golden Age of the British Illustration (1860-1920). Rackham has a connection with Catalonia, as he took part in two international exhibitions held in Barcelona, which led to some of his illustrated books being published in Catalan by Editorial Joventut a few years later. Moreover, the works of Apel·les Mestres (Barcelona, 1854-1936), Alexandre de Riquer (Calaf, 1856-Palma, 1920), Lola Anglada (Barcelona, 1896-Tiana, 1984) and Mercè Llimona (Barcelona, 1914-1998), share a tradition based on popular stories and legends, and stylistic and thematic links, driven by Modernisme and with romantic roots, with the work of the British artist. Despite this evidence, there are no recent studies that deal with the reception and transcendence of Rackham's work in Catalonia, or that compare his imagery with that of the aforementioned Catalan artists. Therefore, this paper studies the life and work of Arthur Rackham, as well as analysing his reception in Catalonia, through his participation in the V Exposició Internacional de Belles Arts i Indústries artístiques de Barcelona, in 1907, and in the VI Exposició Internacional d’Art de Barcelona, in 1911. The translation of his illustrated books into Catalan and their repercussions in the Catalan periodicals of the time have also been taken into account. Likewise, a fundamental element of this research is the comparison and emphasis of the similarities, as well as the pointing out of the differences, between Rackham's fantastic work and that of the modernist illustrators, Apel·les Mestres and Alexandre de Riquer. The influence of Rackham on the drawing of Lola Anglada and Mercè Llimona, two illustrators who worked in Catalonia during the Noucentisme period and later, is also highlighted.
