Abstract: This study investigates the benefits of authentic audiovisual input for language acquisition beginning with a comparison of case studies of two similar Basque girls who have different levels of English proficiency and English television exposure. Building from those studies and the literature in the field, the experimental study then investigates the hypotheses that the variables of watching authentic video, viewing with captions, and the subjects’ background English media exposure will positively influence their language acquisition. The findings showed that while watching authentic English video enhanced acquisition, captioning and informal English media exposure did not contribute to overall improvement.
