Abstract: We have explored the possibility of using a low-cost and portable analytical method based on NIR for classification and differentiation of oils, with the minimum possible complications in terms of cleaning, use and cross-contamination. We analysed different types of olive oils and refined sunflower oils. Two portable NIR devices, SCiO and NeoSpectra with a wavelength range of 740-1070 and 1350-2558 nm respectively, were used. Chemometric techniques such as PCA and PLS-DA were used for the qualitative analysis of the data. We found that both devices were able to distinguish with good accuracy olive oils from sunflower oils.
