This article exposes the result of research and enhancement of the Rolando Videla Olguín (RVO) photographic fund, through an experience based on design and socio-community participation, which made it possible to value a specific period in the history of a town, specifically Putaendo-Chile. RVO was an amateur photographer who worked in the former Putaendo Bronchopulmonary Sanatorium and made a unique photographic record of the dynamics of hospital and daily life associated with the countryside and Chilean folkloric traditions. An interdisciplinary methodology that puts design at the center of safeguarding actions, both with regard to the cadastre, documentary systematization and citizen participation was used for the identification, discussion, definition of attributes and value of the photographs represented in the fund. The results allow visualizing the importance of design as a mediator in the interaction with the community for the definition of the attributes of photography and generating new content around it. The photographic analysis of the collection permitted to reflect on the hospital system from another point of view, understanding it as a normative system, but also as a social one. The conclusions highlight the importance of participatory design to give a new meaning and value to the funds.
