The Mediterranean Sea has always been a place of confluence, but it has also dealt with many conflicts. In XVIth and XVIIth centuries, tuna traps fishing contributed to the economic and cultural development of the Iberian Peninsula, providing a new vision of the sea as a source of resources. This paper analyzes its reintroduction in XVIth century, the first years of development of this ancient art in the Kingdom of Valencia and the role it played within the context of the Mediterranean Sea. It also gives details about their productive and economic importance and, at the same time, about jurisdictional conflicts between different political powers interested in keeping control of these fisheries. Documents from the state archives of the Crown of Aragon and the Archives of the Dukes of Medinaceli have been used as primary sources for this paper.
