THE HONOR SEAT FROM THE FORMER CATHEDRAL OF RODA D’ISàVENA: A NEW APPROACHMENT FOLLOWING THE MATERIAL EVIDENCES

Abstract:
The honor wooden seat that today presides over the presbytery of the former cathedral of Sant Vicenç de Roda d’Isàvena is a strange piece of furniture. It is a free-standing chair, which is designed to be self-supporting. It is covered with a canopy supported by four angular uprights in the form of columns carved with capitals, which still have traces of polychromy. The seat with a simple misericord features tipping mechanism, like a choir stall chair. For all these characteristics, this furniture is certainly rare and unique. In the present paper, a constructive analysis of the chair is made, supported by a comparative study with other similar pieces of furniture, some of them already described by historiography. The final result questions the Roda furniture as a medieval object and I propose, in its current configuration, and through the material evidence, that it is a factitious work, made in the modern period with recycled pieces with medieval origins from a disappeared choir stall set. © 2023 The Author(s).
