Abstract:
This article highlights the revaluation of the Middle Ages taking into consideration its periodic glances towards the Classical, which are hallmarks of a period unjustly qualified as sombre. It follows the pulse of the difficult, but certain, continuity of classical culture throughout the 8th–15th centuries. Particularly, it focuses on elements that the medieval spectacle rescues from the ancient heritage, be it a peculiar version of the tragic form (the Passion), characters that rework in the Christian context some of the heroes of Antiquity (for example, Oedipus or, in a chivalric key, Hercules, Aeneas, Aerope, Jason and Medea, etc.), and even divinities such as Cupid or Fortune. It also draws on symbolic characters from Classical mythology properly Christianised or reinterpreted in the Christian context (Pheme, sirens, fauns, satyrs, Parcae and sibyls) and often used in spectacles with a clear political, civic or religious intentionality
