Abstract:
The juniper oil ovens of Riba-roja d’Ebre are dry stone constructions that are very old. They are used to make juniper oil, a dense liquid with a dark colour and a strong smell. For thousands of years, this oil has been used in ointment form, as a poultice or in solid form, especially in veterinary medicine and perfumery. Ribaroja d’Ebre, from the sixteenth century until the twentieth century, was a great producer and vendor of this oil, demonstrated by the fact that a large number of juniper oil ovens are found in the area.
