Abstract:
After the pandemic, European institutions and the Spanish government have been promoting the transition to personalized home care models, based at the local and community levels, in order to avoid or delay the institutionalization of dependent elderly people in nursing homes. In this article, we note the existence of a change of narrative on the model of care that is centered on the strategy of deinstitutionalization, but we warn of its dangers if it is not accompanied by a defamiliarization and defeminization of care, as well as by a system of financing and robust public policies. Care has to be a social and political issue and not a private and women’s issue. It concludes with the importance of a social and political pact to guarantee the right to care. Without this pact, the care model will continue to be insufficient, unsatisfactory and unjust.
