    Abstract:
The Templars were distinguished for their early activity of compiling documents into cartularies, a practice that intensified in the last quarter of the thirteenth century. This study examines the characteristics and purposes of volumes related to the Crown of Aragon, differentiating between compilations of legal acts concerning the commanderies and those recording papal and royal privileges, as well as inventories. These instruments served administrative, communicative, and memorial functions. They acted as tools to preserve rights and privileges, establishing corporate memory, and communicating institutional conditions to both brothers and dependent communities. The use of Romance languages reflected the need to disseminate information, legitimize actions, and shape the official and identitary history of and for the Templars. The distinctive requirements of governmental centralization fostered a variety of codices in which diverse practical and ideological functions merged into a unified narrative.
