    Abstract:
The rich documentary sources of the Templars and Hospitallers reveal the significant presence of women who interacted with these orders, particularly through their familial and social roles. A typological and linguistic analysis of these documents highlights the spaces occupied by wives, widows, and daughters, whose agency was shaped by patrimonial relationships and marital ties. These roles can be distinctly recognized in their participation in a renewed religiosity. The innovations associated with these orders channelled feminine interactions towards their communities of brethren, as reflected in votive donations and confraternal ties. Additionally, the study of language use, particularly in terms of gender, has enabled the identification of the most frequently occurring feminine terms across various documentary collections from the 12th and 13th centuries. Notably, the recurrence of certain words, consistently found across the five compendia studied, corresponds to elements of women's identity or aspects attributed to the feminine: familial, domestic, and even the religious-institutional realities within both Templars and Hospitallers. In conclusion, the combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative approaches underscores the visibility and prominence of women, despite the overarching predominance of masculine dynamics in institutional and familial contexts.
