A Ritual Space in the Iberian Settlement of L'Assut (Tivenys, Baix Ebre, Tarragona)

Abstract:
This paper presents a study of a building comprising two rooms, which is attached to the eastern wall of the protohistoric settlement of L'Assut, in Tivenys, Baix Ebre, Tarragona, on its outer side, right next to one of its gates. The analysis carried out of the architectural structure comprising the two enclosures, the typology of the archaeological material found within them, as well as certain details relating to their astronomical orientation, allow us to suggest that this was a building dedicated to worship, which would have been in use during the second half of the third century BC and where, amongst other things, the winter solstice would have been celebrated. The results of this research enhance our understanding of Iberian-period places of worship in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula, identifying a possible temple at a site of particular significance on the lower course of the Ebro during this period.
