    Abstract:
The oikonomy refers to the economics of life or the close relationship between work and life and, specifically in this book, to the economy driven by women. The book is divided into four very distinct chapters: Kémit (Egypt); the late Roman Empire (3rd-5th centuries A.D.); Middle Ages (Catalonia, Italy, 13th-15th centuries); and Victorian society. The four analyses share the same objective of trying to understand the historical value of the work conducted by women. The analyses offer a feminist perspective on the care provided by women, particularly because the most important work conducted both by and for society is sustaining and maintaining life. This is followed by physical and social reproduction and, lastly, production.
