The research method used for this thesis is a phenomenological qualitative methodology by using life histories. The research question was: Do the knowledge of elderly life histories allows to apply cares wich reinforce identity, individuality and increase vital satisfaction during their stay at geriàtric centre. The main purpose was to understand the meaning that old people give to their own life histories and the influenceit has on their wishes and needs during their stay in the residence. In the analysis of life histories highlights: old people have expectations of being cared by their sons or daughters. Usually entry into the residence tends to be motivated by health and/or funcional problems that make it difficult to lead an autonomous life. According Goffman, the residences remain features of total institutions. Religious beliefs help to make sense of the death. In conclusion, the life histories and its subsequent analysis allow nurses planning and implementin cares to strengthen identity and individuality promoting self-esteem and enhancing the old age.
