Resum:
Suicide, apart from being one of the most important public health problems, has also been identified as one of the greatest occupational risks affecting the nursing community. The literature on this subject is unanimous in highlighting the great incidence of suicidal behaviour in nurses and has associated it with different sociodemographic, emotional, and labour-related variables. Also, within the university context, nursing students are particularly susceptible to the development of suicidal ideation and behaviour.
The main aim of this thesis is to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon of suicide in both students and nursing professionals and to try to identify or describe those factors associated with suicidal risk in these groups. The knowledge of the real cause of the problem and of those variables that, in some way or another, can intervene could help in the development of prevention strategies, both in the academic and professional environment.
This thesis has been divided into two distinct parts. In the first one, the theoretical framework is established, a comprehensive review of the concept of suicide is presented including different aspects. The second part is the empirical part, which has been divided into five relatively independent studies with nurses and nursing students.
Based on the results obtained in the different studies and the associations observed among the variables proposed, a series of recommendations have been proposed, with the aim of making a contribution to a better understanding and management of suicidal risk, both in professionals and students. Also, in the conclusions chapter, a series of proposals are made to reduce the risk of suicidal behaviour.
