INTRODUCTION: Death is an inherent fact of man, the only thing that is known is that it will occur. Nurses working in the emergency department have multiple barriers that make it difficult to care for the dying patient, including recognition of their own attitudes, abilities and the meaning of death, because only in this way, the way of caring can be justified. OBJECTIVES: To discover the meaning of the process of dying in the emergency department by the nursing staff and to know the feelings, emotions and experiences of the nursing staff working in the service related to death. METHODOLOGY: This thesis is a qualitative research within the Grounded Theory. A total of 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses working in the emergency department. The inclusion criteria were that the informants were nurses, who had worked in the service for a minimum of six months, who were in direct contact with the process of the death of a patient and who voluntarily and anonymously access the performance of the interview and as exclusion criteria were: the nurses who did not want to participate in the study, nurses working in the gynecological and obstetric emergency service and other types of health professionals. RESULTS: The emergent categories of the research were: Knowing the Injured Healer, Recognizing one's own attitudes, The power of the nurse in the process of dignifying to death and the perception of ethical-legal conflicts derived from practice. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses in the emergency department increasingly encounter death situations within the ward; It is essential to know the meaning of this to understand care at the end of life. There are multiple barriers that prevent a holistic and humanized care of the patient in his last stage of life.
