In a rural environment, medicinal plants have been used for health treatments following popular knowledge based on traditions. This knowledge is in danger of being lost at present. However, the consumption of herbal remedies is increasing around the world. The WHO has proposed strategies to integrate traditional medicine and self-treatments based on these remedies into health systems. The objective of our study is to get to know and analyze the importance and significance of the use of herbal remedies regarding health care. This knowledge may make it possible to integrate efficient herbal remedies into the current health system and, thus, improve health care and nursing attention aimed at responding to different health requirements. We used a qualitative methodology with fifty-two interviews carried out in rural towns, following an intentional sample to an information saturation. The content of the data was then analyzed. Coming closer to popular culture affords nurses with a greater sensitivity and an opportunity to work from a holistic outlook. Popular knowledge about medicinal plants which can then be integrated into nursing skills represents a valuable step forward in our profession. Furthermore, we must point out that in order to develop quality nursing care, an increased academic training in the use of medicinal plants is necessary – taking into account both their benefits and their risks. This allows us to develop suitable and quality methods of care.
