Influence of Drug Safety Alerts on Prescription in Primary Health Care The main objective of the study was to assess the impact on the prescription of medicines in the primary care setting of safety alerts issued by the Spanish Medicines Agency (AEM). The study was focused on three safety alerts that address different aspects of the prescription: 1. Safety and preventive drugs: Hormone Replacement Therapy, (HRT). Retrospective observational study on HRT prescription before and after intervention. There was evidence of a decrease in the prescription of HRT (29,6%, alert2002 i 56,9%, alertt- 2004, although less than expected according to a theoretical intervention model. 2. Safety and new drugs: Aliskiren. Observational intervention study before and after the follow-up of patients with active prescription of Aliskiren + ACE inhibitors and /or ARBs. Patients were stratified according to risk. In addition, a specific intervention and a standard one were compared in two different territories. Prescription was reduced by 96.6% in diabetic patients with a prescription for Aliskiren + ACE inhibitors and/or ARBs. The specific intervention led to a faster adoption of the alert recommendations 3. Safety and traditional drugs: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Prospective observational study of before-after intervention in patients on NSAIDs.
