Receiving an unexpected diagnosis, the process of making the decision to terminate a desired pregnancy for medical reasons and the emotional coping with the procedure, is a stressful and vulnerable period for the woman, which leads to an adjustment of expectations about motherhood and parenthood, as well as life plans. In the framework in which we have worked, Termination For Medical Reasons (TFMR) is considered a medical practice similar to the treatment of a pathology. However, this process cannot be separated from the health, social and cultural context in which it takes place. This research was carried out with the main objective of exploring the experience of women during the process of TFMR. For this purpose, a qualitative study was carried out with a phenomenological approach from the perspective of women who underwent a TFMR in a tertiary public hospital in Barcelona. Fifteen semi-structured interviews and two discussion groups were carried out for data collection. The results of the research show that there are different ways of experiencing the process of abortion and that the emotional responses of women are determined by various factors, mainly personal, such as imaginaries of motherhood and the experience with the health care received.
