Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most frequent complications of diabetes and one of the main causes of blindness in working-age population. There are differences in the incidence and behavior of DR between patients with diabetes mellitus 1 (DM1) and diabetes mellitus 2 (DM2), which make us suppose that there are probably factors that can influence differently in both types of DM, thus justifying, the study and search for these factors that allow us to intervene before vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) appears. It is well known that chronic hyperglycemia is one of the main risk factors for microangiopathy and that it can be assessed by measuring HbA1c levels. However, patients with good HbA1c levels who continue to develop RD continue to be observed. Recent studies suggest that retinal neurodegeneration in DM can precede vasculopathy and that glycemic variability can be another risk factor that contributes to the risk of developing microvascular complications such as DR. That is why the main objective of this thesis has been to determine the behavior of diabetic retinopathy in patients with DM1 in our health sector, with respect to its risk factors, its clinical behavior and neurodegeneration, and to assess whether there are differences with retinopathy in patients with DM2. The study of these factors could lead to early diagnosis and better follow-up and treatment.
