A corpus of authentic interpreted court proceedings from Barcelona is analyzed as a series of manifestations of a social system in which subjects coordinate their actions through the mechanism of trust. Particular attention is paid to the signs of distrust expressed by the judge. These signs of distrust are sought in cases where 1) the interpreters make themselves discursively visible (the interpreter describes what is happening, checks that the accused or witness understands what is being said, gives indications of behavior, adds questions or answers or maintains side-conversations with the defendant in the foreign language – conversations that are not translated for the other participants in the hearing) or 2) the judges demonstrate that they understand or speak the foreign language. Five hearings are identified in which there are signs of some degree of distrust. Of these five, there is only one case where trust is totally lost (the judge decides to replace the interpreter) and one case where trust is partially lost (the judge defines a new role for the interpreter) However, in more than half of the trials, the standard codes of ethics for interpreters are contravened, which suggests that the trust-based system functions without the standard ethical norms.
