The objective of this thesis is to better understand the concept of governance and its internalization applied to the management of tourism destinations and to create an instrument to facilitate its measurement. It has been identified how the actors of a tourism system, in this case the Catalan one, perceive governance and the dimensions that integrate it and the models derived from it have been detailed. Based on semantic network analysis, seven dimensions of tourism governance are categorized: participation, coherence, responsibility, effectiveness, knowhow/ quality, openness and simplification. Applying principal component analysis, five models are identified: Transparent Strategy, Liable Outcomes, Hermetic Results-oriented-ism, Democratic Moralism, and Democratic Bureaucracy. The second phase determines how governance is internalized in tourist destinations. This is understood as the commitment of organizations related to destination management to the deployment of governance concepts, practices and actions and the deployment of their roles, responsibilities and power. The methodology used here is that of a case study. Eight organizations from Catalonia -with varying degrees of commitment to governance- have been analysed through in-depth interviews and documentary reviews.
