Gender violence is the central theme of this thesis. This is a problem that affects 6 out of 10 women in Ecuador, a prevalence that has been maintained during the last decade despite the interventions of the Ecuadorian Government. Knowing the perceptions from the point of view not only of women but also of men allows us to have a broader vision of the exposed problem. The main objectives were focused on analyzing the differences and similarities in the experiences and perceptions of Ecuadorian men and women regarding the types and areas of occurrence of gender violence in Guayaquil. A mixed type study was conducted in the period from 2019 to 2021. Within the qualitative research, the techniques of surveys, interviews and focus groups were applied. While quantitative data were collected through a survey of 1,147 persons. The results of the research show that gender violence is present in all areas where human beings develop, including virtual areas. The perspectives in relation to gender violence do not differ significantly between women and men, where stereotypes and cultural roles assigned to each sex are a determinant that normalizes and makes invisible the different forms of manifestation of gender violence. The feeling of fear and shame are aspects that prevent women from denouncing the acts that victimize them. The self-blame and social blame placed on women victims of gender-based violence is an aspect that prevents radical changes from being made to combat this problem. This research highlights the need to work on the visibility of the implications of gender violence in order to break patriarchal paradigms of domination that in many cases are built by barriers constructed by both men and women themselves.
