Different authors highlight the importance of a non-judgmental approach when caring for parents with mental illness. The objective of this research is to understand the perspectives and practices of mental health nursing professionals in the care of people with mental illness who are parents. It focuses on nurses who work in specialised mental health care facilities in Catalonia (hospital and community settings) and who care for adults who are parents. This is a qualitative and phenomenological methodology study. The data collection technique were the in-depth and semi-structured interview, the field diary and a questionnaire. To carry out the analysis process, the Colaizzi model was followed. In addition, Tronto's definition of care was applied to analyse their experiences. Mental health nurses consider that social stereotypes regarding people with mental illness can be transferred to their parenting role and can cause suffering. “Support” is the key element from which their care practices are defined: knowing and registering the 'person's history', informing and providing psychoeducation to the person and the family, empowering the role of parent, and addressing guilt and other emotions. Trust is identified not only as a key element of the therapeutic relationship, but also as necessary to be able to talk about parenthood, assess related needs and be able to intervene in this regard. Although different professionals valued having intervention protocols positively, since they can unify criteria in the care of families, the majority considered that they could lead to forms of practice that were too rigid. During hospital admissions, it is considered important to encourage contact between parents-children-family, suggesting changes within the spaces intended for this purpose. Training and guidelines that take into account the individuality of each case stand out as key elements to work on in the future, providing recommendations in this regard.
