Bio-inspired nanochannel platform for the detection of pathogens in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)

    Infectious diseases, particularly healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), posed significant health challenges, increasing mortality, morbidity, and healthcare costs. HAIs affected millions of patients annually, emphasizing the need for effective control and prevention measures. This thesis addressed the critical need for early diagnosis and treatment guidance of infections by developing advanced biosensing technologies for rapid and precise detection of key analytes (e.g., miRNA, bacteria, viral biomarker…). The core focus of this research was the development of a bio-inspired nanochannel platform utilizing porous silicon (pSi) for electrochemical biosensing applications. PSi was chosen for its high surface area, tunable pore size, biocompatibility, and ease of functionalization, making it an excellent candidate for biosensing platforms. The primary focus was on electrochemical etching, which allowed precise control over pore characteristics. Stabilizing and functionalizing the pSi surface was essential for enhancing its properties and preventing oxidation.
