Abstract:
This doctoral thesis reflects that companies continue to base their wage policy on the worker’s educational level, because educational credentials are still the most reliable indicator of an individual’s ability. Nevertheless, competencies play an important part in determining a worker’s earnings and especially when acquired on the job, whilst specialised knowledge, even when not fully implemented in the workplace, contributes to the later development of competencies. Finally, with regard to the educational and skills mismatches, although male graduates show a higher incidence in both areas, empiric analyses reveal more severe consequences for female graduates’ earnings. The possibility exists that these results are influenced by an asymmetric conception of overeducation according to gender.
