Abstract:
For the last four decades the Filipino government has promoted the emigration of its citizens. This has led to the phenomenon of “commodified bodies”, wherein the State exports labor in return for surplus in the form of remittances. The Filipino diaspora has literally spread worldwide. In the Raval, Barcelona (Spain), one concrete example of this diaspora, the Filipino community (“FilCom”) has been considered “non conflictive”. Although the majority of the adults are employed in menial jobs, the community distinguishes itself by displaying a sophisticated social capital. Formally organized and interconnected groups and associations offer newcomers an open reception, including orientation to resolve different migration issues, as well as help for social suffering and to counter labor exploitation. In return, the community expects a commitment in the form of volunteering. The efficiency of social capital is evident in the care the community offers its members, and particularly regarding the educational issues of younger children and adolescents. The importance of education circulates transnationally and is pursued in order to achieve social betterment. In order to analyze immigration it is crucial to include emigration dynamics, and also transnational flows and practices. In this vein, this thesis is the result of a five-year fieldwork between Spain and the Philippines. Furthermore, it includes follow-ups on individuals and families between the two continents.
