    Abstract:
The persistent air leak (PAL) is the most common complication after thoracic surgery. We present a cohort study, which randomly established two cohorts of patients with PAL. The cohort A was hospitably treated with a chest tube connected to suction. The cohort B was treated as outpatients by a drain connected to a portable suction device. It showed no increased morbidity or patient readmissions of the outpatients, also showed increased mobility and quality of life of patients; we observed a decrease in the average hospital stay (11.42 days for the cohort A and 5.74 days for the cohort B); we observed savings of reoperation for the treatment of the PAL (from 44% in cohort A compared to 2% in cohort B) and it was estimated a cost savings of 431511 euros
