    Abstract:
An increase in protein intake during the first year of life in healthy infants is associated with higher BMI at two years of life. This increase is mediated in part by IGF-1. Infants fed with higher protein formulas, have a higher metabolic work load that results in increased cardiac function at two years of life. This functional overload does not produce structural changes of the myocardium and does not affect cardiac mass, or blood presure. A reduction of the protein content in infant formulas healthy infants could reduce the risk of obesity and functional overload of the cardiovascular system. The mechanism and effect of early metabolic programming lasts at least one year after the end of the nutritional intervention.
