Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyzes third-sector care of the intellectually handicapped and the sector's function of providing social services that are public responsibility in conjunction with the state and the market.<br/><br/>On the basis of the relationship between state and civil society, an analysis is made of how the resurgence of civil society in the process of democratizing modern societies represents the recuperation of their public dimension. This dimension is connected to that of political society which was removed from the state during the process in which the state was assimilated to the apparatus of government.<br/><br/>An ethnographic approach was used to analyze three stages in the history of these entities: charisma, professionalization and generation of value. The organizational structure, services and relations are analyzed in search of the balance between two management logics that generates a double institutional isomorphism: public administration and commercial company.
