Abstract:
The main aim of the PhD Dissertation ('Els determinants de la localització industrial i residencial. Una aplicació als municipis catalans', that is: 'Industrial and Residential Location Determinants. An Application for Catalan Municipalities') is to identify location determinants of population and economic activities. The geographical area used in the empirical estimations has been the Catalan Municipalities and the period analysed, from 1986 to 1996.The most significant contribution of this work consists on a simultaneous approach to both jobs and population location, and to join it with an additional analysis of residential location and industrial location of new establishments.Local level has been used in order to identify location phenomenon at the territorial level in which them are involved. This work pretends to contribute to solve the problem of a lack of research at this level in Catalonia.This analysis can be carried out by to ways: firstly, by studying separately industrial and residential location phenomenon or, secondly, by studying those phenomenon in a simultaneous way.Following the first one we have used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Quantile Regression (RQ) for the analysis of the residential location, and both a Poisson and a Conditional Logit models for the industrial location analysis. And following the second one, we have used a Two Stage Least Squares (TSLS) for the simultaneous analysis of location of population and jobs.Results show that location patterns of population and firms are not the same, and that there is a close relationship between location of population and jobs.
