Abstract:
This thesis was aimed at evaluating the efficacy of anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen 600 mg t.i.d./10 days) or antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin/clavulanate 500/125 mg t.i.d./10 days) compared to placebo in the resolution of cough in patients with uncomplicated acute bronchitis. Multicentre, parallel, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial (trial registration: ISRCTN07852892), in which patients from 18 to 70 years of age presenting symptoms associated with respiratory tract infection of less than one week of duration and presence of purulent expectoration were enrolled. The primary outcome measure was the number of days with frequent cough. A total of 416 subjects were randomised with a mean age of 45.1 years. The median of days with frequent cough since the basal visit was 11 days (ibuprofen 9 days, 95% CI 8-10; antibiotic 11 days, 95%CI 10-12; placebo 11 days, 95%CI 8-14; log-rank test=0.251). No differences were observed in number of days with cough between the three arms.
